Retro Game Review: Tetris (Game Boy)

July 22, 2013

As a trial run in July, SaveUsFromObscurity will be doing Retro Game Reviews. We’ll be looking at games available through either the 3DS or Wii U Virtual Console. If it’s still fun to write these reviews, you’ll start to see more of them in the future. Feel free to comment with any critiques/thoughts on the review and the game! Thanks!

Easiest review of all time. You haven’t heard of Tetris? Ok, let’s do a quick review and wrap up our Game Boy Virtual Console reviews for the month. Yes, this is a completely unnecessary review. Screw it, we’ll do it anyway. I don’t feel like waiting until April Fools Day to do this.

The Basics: Gameplay and Graphics

Tetris is a puzzle game. Probably the most famous puzzle game of all time. You have multiple, different shaped blocks. A block falls at the beginning and you have to move it to fit the way you want. Then another block falls. You have to get a straight line of blocks to clear a row and get points, as well as take away a line to prevent the screen from filling up with blocks, preventing more blocks from falling. You go until your screen fills up.

Graphics are Game Boy graphics. Retro Fans will like playing with this look. It’s a puzzle game though, and not one of the newer versions of Tetris. You shouldn’t be looking for something magnificently detailed to begin with.

Story: What are you trying to do?

HA HA HA HA HA HA HA. Oh, my review format. It’s a puzzle game. Tetris. How can there be a story?

Issues: Does it have any flaws worth noting?

It’s Tetris. The only issue is when it feels like the game is trying to mess with you. No, there’s no noticeable glitches as far as I can tell.

The Recommendation: Is this game right for you?

Screw the format, It’s Tetris. A single player puzzle game that’s good for playing for a few minutes, unless you’re really into puzzle games and want to get that top score. It’s a fun game for anyone to play. Unless you hate puzzle games. Then stay away.

Thanks for reading this retro review. I’m sure I’ll use it again for April Fools Day if I’m lazy. (Or next April Fools day if you’re reading this on April Fools day.)
